One of the fortunate things about living here in Whitehaven is our proximity to the Lake District National Park, England's largest national park. It is here that one can find the highest peak, Scafell, and the deepest lake, Wastwater. Visitors flock here in car loads during the summer to enjoy the outdoors. Rambling, or walking, is a national past-time here, and there are walking trails all over this area. Farmers often permit ramblers to walk through their fields, and it is not unusual to find cars parked at all sort of crazy angles, just off the narrow roadways. On a recent Saturday the weatherman promised rain but the prediction was that it would hold off until the afternoon. Scott and I decided to set out early for Boot, a small pub town up in the fells about a half hour's drive from here. We had been to Boot before when we took the narrow steam train, La'al Ratty, to the top of the line. From there we knew there were lots of trails that promised breathtaking scenery and a good walk. We reached Boot, parked, and set off to find the waterfall, which we knew was there but had not previously hiked to. We enjoyed a lovely morning hiking through the hills and, after a wrong turn or two, did eventually find the waterfall. The rain held off until about 2:30 in the afternoon, just about the time we tucked in for lunch. Scott took some beautiful pictures and we thought we might share a few of them. Of course, if any of you want to "book in" for a visit we would be happy to take you back personally :)!

Not too many sheep around now. The British do love their lamb after all.
These guys have pretty much taken over the fields. |
